1) Charakter und Charaktererschaffung
1.1) Charaktererschaffung:

Far from your mind while strolling through the nearby woods is the rumor of a mysterious gypsy wagon that some claimed to have seen. But then you see the colorful wagon sitting in the valley below. Strangely, you find yourself drawn to the wagon. As you approach, a woman's voice from inside says, 'Enter, O Seeker.'
Upon entering, you find an old gypsy sitting in a curtained room. In front of her is a table upon which sit two incense bowls. The ancient gypsy smiles as she says, 'We have been waiting such a long time, but at last you have come. Sit here and I shall read the path of your future.' She throws some powder into the bowls that causes a thick blue smoke to boil upwards from them. Staring into the smoke she says, 'Let us begin the casting.'
You answer the gypsy qestions.
'So be it!' says the gypsy, as it from a great distance. 'Thy path is chosen!' Thus began thy quest as chronicled in Ultima IV.
With the defeat of the Triad of Evil marking the end of the Three Agees of Darkness, the lands of Britannia entered a new Age of Enlightenment. A champion was needed to show the peoples of Britannia the long neglected path to virtue.
You were choosen to be this champion. Heroically did you grow strong in the ways of the Eight Virtues: Honesty, Compassion, Valor, Justice, Sacrifice, Honor, Spirituality, and Humility. By many great deeds did you gain understanding of Truth, Love and Courage, thus becoming the first mortal to set eyes upon the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom. Upon completing your heroic quest, having shown the landsmen of Britannia the Way of the Avatar, you return to your world, an Avatar in your own right.

The Summoning |
From nowhere, smoky wisps of clouds begin to form in the clear, moonlit sky. In a few short moments the sky is filled with dark, ominous clouds that completely block the moon's pale light. Your bedroom is bathed in quiet darkness as you lie sleeping lightly.
Something rouses you and your eyes open sleepily to be met by a soft, blue glow reflecting from the wall. Slowly, you turn your head until you can see the source of the light. You take a quick breath as you see that the light is emanating from a shimmering circle suspended over your bed.
As you look at the light, a darkening begins to appear in its center. The darkening gradually materializes into a form you suddenly recognize as the symbol of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom! The last time you such as this was beyond the circle of stones in the nearby woods. That prior occasion marked the quest that forever changed the course of your life.
You stare as the light begins to diminish and finally wink out. Something falls softly onto the bed. Reaching out, you turn on the light at your bedside. There, lying before you, is an amulet. You hesitantly reach for it. Gripping it tightly in your hand, your finger automatically traces over the familiar etching on its surface. Finally! Finally! A sign from Britannia! It has to be! It could be nothing else.

Jumping from the bed, you hastily pull on some clothes. With a few long strides you cross the room to stand before a glass case sitting on a shelf. Visible beneath the glass, resting upon a velvet cloth, is the Ankh, symbol of your Avatarhood. Reverently, you open the glass case and remove it. If what you think is habbening is truly happening, then you may have need of this.
You open the door of your bedroom and step out. Hesitating, one hand on the door, you look back wondering if you will ever return. Shaking your head of these thoughts, you pull the door closed and leave the house.
With the aid of an occasional moonbeam piercing the dark cloud cover, you head for the circle of stones near the willow tree in the nearby woods. Stange shadows cast by the moonlight filter down through the treetops as thoughts of the past race through your mind. Your attendtion is returned to the present as you see, just ahead, the circle of stones.
Often had you come here and sat for hours at a time hoping to once again see the shimmering blue door that would allow you to return to Britannia, to those whose friendship had come to mean so much. But never had the blue door reappeared. Less frequently you came, until finally, sadly, you gave up altogether.
With renewed hope, you stand before the circle of stones, the Ankh in one hand and the amulet in the other. Minuts slip by and nothing happens. Impatience turns to anxiety. The gate must open! The mystical arrival of the amulet could mean nothing else! Long do you stand ther, until the amulet slips from your grip and falls within the circle of stones.
While you stare dejectedly at the amulet lying within the circle, you notice a bluish shimmering in the air above the amulet. Looking down at the ankh in your hand, you see it is also enveloped in a soft blue glow. Carefully, you place the glowing Ankh beside the amulet.
Instantly, a shimmering blue door springs up!

With heart beating rapidly, you step into it.

The Arrival |
Your senses are jerked from their momentary disorientation by a blinding streak of lightning that strikes with a thunderous crash not more than a hundred feet from you.

You are standing in a clearing surrounded by a dark and forbidding forest. Overhead, roiling, black clouds fill the sky while thunder and lightning continue to crash around you. Britannia! It must be Britannia! But something is wrong. Instead of the sense of elation expected upon returning here after all these years, you are overcome with a foreboding sense of wrongness.
"My friend!" shouts someone from behind you. A familiar voice from the past causes you to whirl about. Racing toward you is Shamino, someone you thought you might never see again.
Strongly grasping your hand, he exclaims, "We were afraid the summoning would fail! 'Tis nigh impossible to use any magic without invoking intervention from Blackthorn. Let us not tarry for the summoning has surly not gone unnoticed."
Trusting your friend's judgment, you hod your many questions until a safer time. Hastily you retrieve the amulet and Ankh that lie at your feet, but before you can move, the very darkness about you begins to swirl and change. Three shapes begin to materialize in the murky gloom. "Shadowlords!" hisses Shamino through clenched teeth. Quickly, he draws his sword and moves between you and the barely discernible shapes.
The foremost apparition traces a pattern in the air with a wispy forefinger. An ebony black arrow solidifies before it and hangs suspended for a moment, then, with a flick of its hand, the Shadowlord casts the glowing bolt at Shamino. The arrow stikes him full in the chest! Dropping his sword, he sinks to the ground, lines of pain, and something worse, etched into his face.
The dark forms close in around you. At your feet, Shamino's body convulses in pain, but not a sound escapes his lips. Without warning, the amulet, thightly gripped in your hand, emits a bright blue glow. Upon seeing the amulet the Shadowlords shrink back. The wispy shadows start to swirl and fade back into the inky darkness from whence they came.

Shamino lies upon the ground, body twisted in agony, the dark arrow protruding from his chest. A normal arrow could not cause such pain; it must be the evil enchantment with wich it was created. Realizing it must be removed, you jerk the arrow from Shamino's body and hurl it with all your might. The air about the arrow crackles as it flies into the darkness.
Shamino's body relaxes. Inspecting the bloody wound, you notice it is already beginning to fester from foulness with wich the bolt was conjured.
"We will find aid at Iolo's. It is but a short walk to the east," Shamino mutters. With a grim determination, you help Shamino to his feet and half-carry him out of the clearing and eastward through the forest.
|
The Story |
Within a short time, the soothing sounds of a lute being masterfully played can be heard through the forest ahead. Rounding a bend in the path, you see a dim light emanating from a small hut nestled among the trees.Approaching the hut, you loosen an arm from around Shamino and knock on the heavy wooden door. The lute playing stops abruptly to be replaced by the muffled clinking of metal.
"Who goes there?" demands a familiar voice from within. Leaning wearily against you, Shamino mutters, "Open the door, thou son of a goat, before I donate all my blood to decorate thy doorstep!"

The door jerks open to reveal the familiar form of Iolo standing framed within the doorway. Reaching out to help Shamino, Iolo turns to you with a grimace "My friend, thou art a sight for sore eyes! I see that Shamino, as usual, has been unable to stay out of trouble." His casual remarks cannot mask his deep concern as he helps Shamino to a bed and carefully tends to his wound.
After seeing to Shamino, Iolo fills two mugs with a foaming broth and beckons you to a coarse wooden table nest to the warm hearth. "Tis good to see thee after these many long years, my friend. It seems thy summoning didst not go unnoticed. From the looks of Shamino's wound I'd say thou dost now know of the Shadowlords."
You recount to Iolo the events of your arrival. Your patience giving out, a flood of questions erupts from you.
"Slowly, my friend," Iolo smiles, "make thyself at ease and I will tell thee of the bitter events that have brought us these dark times.
"Not long after thy departure, Lord British and the most prominent wizards of Britannia gathered at his castle and called a meeting of the Great Council.
"Among the acts of the Council was the sealing of the dungeons that lie beneath Britannia in hopes of entombing the foul denizens that dwell within. Some creatures still manage to escape, but their eyes are unaccustomed to light. They rarely room the countryside by day, but wary must be the traveller by night!"
"Another act of the Great Council, and by far the most difficult, was to raise the Codex from the depths of the Abyss. The influx of the combined magical power of the Great Council disruped the very bowels of Britannia. Where once was the Abyss, now stands an immense mountain, created from the molten lava that spewed forth.
"Unbeknownst to the Council, our new and glorious mountain left an enormous void over wich all of Britannia rests. Some speculate that the dungeons may reach into this underground void at their deepest levels. It is believed that the underworld has become a vast breeding ground for creatures who have grown into horrors for worse than their original forms.
"A band of adventurers chanced upon a tunnel beneath the river that flows through Spiritwood, where one of these caverns collapsed, opening a passage to the Underworld. They returned, weary and bewildered, with tales of creatures that mount the dark air and others that shake the ground.
"Lord British was intrigued by these tales and gathered an entourage of stalwart fighters to accompany him into the Underworld. But his party was overwhelmed by the tremendous number and power of these creatures, though thy fought valiantly.
"Panic erupted throughout Britannia when the sole survivor of the expedition returned with a small parchment upon which was recorded the dread tale of their journey!"
Iolo pauses momentarily as he reflects upon these dark thoughts.

"Blackthorn, a trusted but ambitious subject, took over the ruling of Britannia to calm the ensuing chaos. This we accepted until the Shadowlords appeared. They corrupted Blackthorn in some manner unbeknownst to us, and Blackthorn's reign is now one of oppression and tyranny. Through him the meaning of the virtues have been corrupted to serve the self-righteous!
"Shamino, myself, and others thou hast known have been declared outlaws by Blackthorn's regime and must skulk about as common criminals. We keep distance between ourselves so that we canst not be rounded up in one fell swoop. But this cannot go on forever. Blackthorn and those hellish Shadowlords are bleeding Britannia. Rule must be restored to Lord British, if he still lives!
"The gravity of the matter compelled us to risk a meeting. We arrived at the only possible answer: attempt to summon thee, my friend, to aid us in our quest to discover the fate of Lord British. The risk was great, for no use of strong magical power goes unnoticed by the Shadowlords, but we felt there was no other coice."
Shaking off the gloom of his tale a jovial glint returns to Iolo's eye. He nods in Shamino's direction and says, "But, since thou art here, my friend, and hath naught else to do
I'm sure, what say thee we nursemaid this poor excuse for an adventurer back to some semblance of health, then embark upon our quest! If life still breathes within Lord British, we shall restore him as the rightful ruler of Britannia!"
9.02) Auf der Reise durch Britannia:
9.02.01) Iolos Haus:

27th day of the 11th month of the year 137 Herein is detailed the odyssey of his Majesty Lord British as recorded by Remoh, scribe to the court of Lord British. With us on this journey into the uncharted Underworld venture the knights Arionis, Meridin, Geraci, Shaana, Noin, and Roin.
At dawn, we set off on our skiff down the River Maelstrom, east of Spiritwood. Before the falls, we pause to remember the brave men who discovered this entrance to the Underworld. Then we cast off and repeat their plunge into the lightless underground waterway. We land our boat on the western shore of a great lake. The cavern's low ceiling hangs close over us and the humidity is oppressive. Arionis and Geraci erect a wooden sign commemorating our expedition. The rest of us repair the damage to our skiff inflicted by the subterranean rapids that carried us here. We embark again, following a navigable stream south. After a short distance, a tributary branches off to the east, but we continue south. The cavern walls now tower above us, dimly reflecting our torchlight. The current grows stronger and the crashing sound of tortured water steadily increases. Abruptly, the river turns a sharp bend. The roar grows painfully loud as our skiff careens down a great fall. A storage cask breaks loose and knocks Meridin our of the boat during our fall. The skiff lands flooded, bur miraculously upright. We drag the unconscious Meridin back into the boat and retrieve the cask. He revives as we row west, past a southern tributary. The river slows as we arrive at another fork. We continue north, hugging the water-hewn stone wall on our right. As the river swings back to the southwest, we hear the sound of approaching waterfalls. Quickly we land the boat on the southern shore. Geraci sets off to explore a promising passage through the rocks to the southeast. On returning, she reports that the natural fissure slopes downward steeply, but rejoins the river beyond the treacherous falls. We portage our skiff around the falls with little difficulty and are once again on our way. While the day wanes thousands of feet above us, the river empties into a calm lake, stretching out beyond our sight into the murky gloom. We row south by southeast, following the shore. A muffled scream, a heavy splash are our first omens of danger. We all stare at the stern where, moments before, the raven haired knight Shaana sat. Meridin quickly intones two words of magic, and the lake around us explodes in light, blinding us momentarily. We see a hideous ebony creature, twice as large as our skiff with Shaana clutched in one of its slimy tentacles. Already dozens of yards away, it is retreating ten paces further with every heartbeat. Lord British strides to the stern and stretches his arms toward the receding monstrosity. In a voice as clear as crystal, in a tone as urgent as the wind, he speaks seven words. We do not comprehend their meaning, but we witness their impact. The squid creature pulls up suddenly. A wrenching noise tears through the dank air. A large wave passes under our boat. The squid creature has been vanquished. The light from Meridin's spell fades, and new torches are lit to replace those dropped in panic. Shaana, dragged from the water, now sleeps at her place upon the boat's stern. Our king rests also, deep in the meditation of the virtues. We row on. Eventually, at the southern shore of the lake, we follow the westernmost of two identical-looking streams. We explore several land passages along the way, but they all prove to be dead ends. The river turn north, flows on a while, and then perversely turns south. Our first day's journey ends at this juncture.
We awaken to a morning as dark as the blackest of nights. Our campfire is a damp mound of cold ashes. The underground river has risen in the night, soaking the meager supply of dry wood we brought with us., Setting out upon the waters again, we row south. Scarcely an hour passes before we come upon another waterfall, one with no opportunities for portaging around. From the beach, however, we can see the river resuming only a few yards beyond the falls. With few options, we brace ourselves and steer over the falls. As soon as we are righted, though, the coursing water turns abruptly and we plunge down another fall. Shaken and bruised, the group has barely enough time to secure a firm grip on the boat before we plunge down a third cascade. After a brief respite, we pass over a fourth, though smaller falls. Finally, we pass into a small, tranquil lake. We land on the south shore and examine the area. Though a large fissure in the cliff walls provides a land exit to the south, no navigable waterway leaves the cavern. There is no choice: we shoulder our remaining provisions and continue on foot through the fissure. The rough ride over the falls has eliminated another option: if we ever return to Britannia, it will not be by retracing our steps. The path leaving the cavern is at first swampy and tedious to walk upon, but the way becomes easier as we leave the lake behind. Soon the path curves north again and we come upon a great cavern with an uneven rock ceiling many stories high. We are now walking on yellow grass-like growth. A movement by his feet causes Arionis to halt. Before we can draw our weapons, a great leathery tentacle as thick as a man's leg coils around Arionis then starts dragging him into its underground lair. Noin drives his deadly main gauche into the tentacle. Thick green fluid streams from the severed tentacle as it falls away. As Arionis stumbles to his feet, he quickly shouts a warning. Noin turns to sever a second tentacle just before it ensnares him. Movement in the grass from which we have just come indicates more tentacled monstrosities approaching. We flee together to the north side of the cavern, slipping between rocks into a passage leading away to the east. Before long the passage turns and we head south again. At the end of the passage, we find ourselves in a massive cavern. The walls and ceiling extend beyond the glow of our torches. We wait in vain for our echoes to return. It is difficult to fathom a cavern so large it stifles echoes. We turn to the right, hugging the southern wall. The stench of a stagnant river fills the air. As we walk, the mud gives way to sand. When we have left the river miles behind us, we encamp.
A shriek of pain awakens us after only a few hours of sleep. Meridin utters an oath followed by two eerie sounds, and a grisly scene is revealed. The knight Geraci is standing unsteadily, slicing her dagger at six great worm that swarm around her, rearing up to strike, while deftly evading her dagger. Her left arm is held against her chest, in an attempt to staunch the flow of blood from a gaping wound. Lord British raises his staff and utters an incantation. A deep chill descends momentarily, then the six worms forget their prey and assault each other with unreasoned fury. Meridin magically draws out the worms' poisonous venom. We quickly bind Geraci's arm, gather our gear, and resume our journey eastward along the southern wall. Only two worms remain writhing in combat as we depart. After the wall finally curves to the north, we take a passage out of the cavern to the northeast. The trail is rocky, and wide enough for three to walk abreast. The twins, Noin and Roin, bringing up the rear, are the first to notice the large, winged creature with matted, brown fur and sharp, unsheathed talons. When we stop to look, however, it flies off. Half an hour later, we notice two of these creatures, but both fly off again as we turn. An hour later, three of these ugly creatures approach, flying closer than the previous forays dared, before veering off. We quicken our pace. The passage empties into a large grassy area with a high, earthen ceiling. As we stop to rest, a deafening crescendo of screeches heralds the invasion of a dozen winged monsters. The avian terrors attack in force. Armour and skin is ripped from our backs. Our swords swing, our daggers fly, but to no avail. Only two winged monsters are wounded then finished. The remaining ten circle us furiously as Lord British shouts ou words of mystic command. Four more attackers are destroyed, but many more of our party have fallen. As I fight, I see Meridin from the corner of my eye. He crawls out of the fray and raises his arms. Before he falls, he gasps four words. A great flame breaks out between his outstretched arms and surges forward. One by on, the last of the nightmarish creatures is consumed with flame. The largest bat spirals to the ground. Its burning carcass crashes next to Meridin's corpse - a memorial fire to our great archmage.
Today, the three of us remaining buried the valiant knights Arionis, Meridin, Geraci, Noin, and Roin, here upon the underground battlefield where they fell.Tomorrow we seek our way back to our own world; our disastrous quest here is finished.
The Wraiths came this morning. There were three of them. They walked through the stone. Their blackness was deeper than the shadows from which theyemerged. Advancing towards Lord British, they ignored Shaana and myself. Lord British held their gazes, murmuring words of life, healing and protection. Still they advanced. One raised its hand, pointing at our lord. Then a silver bolt struck our immortal king and he fell to the stony earth. Shaana was frozen, transfixed. I stumbled forward, but when I touched that cloak, I shrank back. Foreboding washed over me. They took our lord with them. I was powerless to stop them. I am afraid we all are.

Ethics The Ethics of Britannia, or the accepted measure of proper behavior, were long based on the Way of the Avatar. As time progressed, the lessons of this historic tale came to be interpreted in many ways. In fact, many people interpreted the Way of the Avatar in ways that wouldn't require them to strive to uphold these virtues. Now, Lord Blackthorn, acting king of all Britannia, has enacted a Code of Virtue that leaves no room for misinterpretation. 1. Thou shalt not lie, or thou shalt lose thy tongue. 2. Thou shalt help those in need, or thou shalt suffer the same need. 3. Thou shalt fight to the death if challenged, or thou shalt be banished as a coward. 4. Thou shalt confess to thy crime and suffer its just punishment, or thou shalt be put to death. 5. Thou shalt donate half of thy income to charity, or thou shalt have no income. 6. If thou dost lose thine own honor, thou shalt take thine own life. 7. Thou shalt enforce the laws of virtue, or thou shalt die as a heretic. 8. Thou shalt humble thyself to thy superiors, or thou shalt suffer their wrath.
|
Name: Smith
You see: A strangely familiar horse. "Hey..." "You look familiar, have we met?"
Yes: "I thought so..." "What is thy name?"
Job: "Well... I eat hay."
Eat oder Hay: "Yep. Oh, I'm also here to ask you something."
Ask: "Lord British wanted me to ask you if you were enjoying this game?"
No: "Well, if you have any complaints, write to him at Origin. He would really like to know."
Yes: "He shall be so glad to hear it... Of course, he won't ever know unless you write to him at Origin and tell him so. I know first hand he'd like that."
Bye: "Come back and see me again. Really!" "Way back... Way, way back... I forgot to tell you something!"
"Hello, ... You know what?"
Forgot oder Tell: "Yea... The answer... It was... INFINITY !
· Thou hast strayed far from the path of the Avatar. Seek now to renew a life of Virtue, lest thy soul pass finally beyond my reach!
· Thy soul seeks direction from thy heart, misguided one. Accept now this new chance to prove thy worth, ere thou loseth the Way forever!
· It is within thee to attain great power, O seeker. Search always for new ways of good, and arm thyself well for the trial that lie ahead!
· Thou showest well the wisdom of an Avatar, but not yet hast thou achieved the potential. Stasy on the path and thy soul shall flourish.
· Well armed art thou to fight Death's embrace, O enlightened one! Return once more to the world for thy Destiny awaits thee!

BACKTHORN'S LAW OF COMPASSION Thou shalt help those in need, or thou shalt suffer the same need.
|
An unending darkness engulfs thee ...
Thou hast found refuge.
No evil lives here, only peace and darkness.
But thy slumber is disturbed !
Someone shouts
"FORTIS FORTUNA ANENTARI"
There is a peal of thunder !
"It is within thee to attain great power, O seeker ...
Strange words are intoned.
Vertigo ...

9.02.03) Im Norden Britannias - The Resistance - The Oppression:
"Hail, ...!
For thy valiant deeds, I shall reward thee !
Thou art now level .., and wiser oder quicker oder stronger!"

Enter the shrine of Justice
Thou dost approach the tranquil Shrine ...
... and thou dost kneel before the Altar.
Upon what virtue dost thou meditate?
Justice
Mantra: BEH - Mantra: BEH - Mantra: BEH
The Altar speaks and a Quest is ordained!
"'Tis now thy Sacred Quest to go unto the Codex and learns the weakness of the Unjust!"
"Return again when thy Quest is done!"

BACKTHORN'S LAW OF SACRIFICE Thou shalt donate half of thy income to charity, or thou shalt have no income.
|
A Guard: "Thou wilt give half thy gold to charity!"

Any: "Never heard of 'em."
Tactus: "I see... I think thou had best see Archmage Flain! He shall be eager to meet thee. See him in the tower of Skara Brae and ask him of the Oppression!"
Bye: "Live by the Eight Laws!"

9.02.05) Erste Seereise zur Isle of the Avatar:

Virtue: "'Tis thee ..., that knows the virtues better than all others!"
Bye: "Farewell my old friend, return for me when thou canst!"
Zu fünft reisten wir weiter Richtung Isle of the Avatar.

Name: Sutek
You see: A young, solemn mage.
"Greetings, I am Sutek. What is thy name?" ... "A pleasure. Art thou the Avatar of legend?"
Any: "Oh." (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "I have been scrying for the nature of the three Shards! I have learned they were formed at the time of the first Dark Lord. When Mondain's Gem of Immortality was destroyed, its shards still harbored unspeakable evil! They lay festering deep within the earth, but now their malevolent power has been unleashed will the world. The Shards and the Shadowlords can and must be destroyed! The Shards must be recovered from their resting places in the boundless Underworld, and cast into the Eternal Flames of Truth, Love, and Courage... Even as each respective Shadowlord stands nigh will the flame of the Principle it opposes. Take now this knowledge and use it well!"
Nun ging unsere Reise zur Isle of the Avatar weiter.

Bye: "Please, return and take me with you when thou canst."

The path that was revealed traveled first southwest across some high peaks, opening to a large system of caverns. Then the way led southwest. At a major intersection it turned northwest, soon branching northeast. After a long journey northward, the passage turned west. Here the path went on to rocky hills to the southwest, then turned northwest. Over a lake it ran, to a massive series of great falls, ending in a larger lake. Here, will a small isle, lies the Shard of Falsehood!"

'Tis there, northward across cavernous peaks from the dungeon, amidst the boiling lava, that the mystic arms are said to lie! Dost thou seek the fate of Lord British?"
Any: "I see."
Yes: "Remember only the Mystic arms work near great evil. Only such evil could hold our lord!"
Bye: "Good luck, thou shalt need it!"

Bye: "Farewell, good Avatar!"

Shard: "The accursed Shard of Hatred that spawned my former master lies within the underworld at the location thou wouldst call I'A", I'A" Enter through the dungeons by Lost Hope Bay!"
Bye: "I bid you a safe journey."

9.02.07) The Resistance & The Oppression:

Judge oder Dryden: "Dost thou wish to join the Oppression?"
Any: "Begone, fool, before I blast thee!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "First, thou must prove thy allegiance! Tell me the name of a member of the Great Council, so we might dispatch the traitor!"
Any: "I do not believe thee! Begone, fool, before I blast thee!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Hassad: "We know that one already! Begone, fool, before I blast thee!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Malifora oder Annon oder Goeth oder Felespar oder Fiona oder Sindar: "Ah, very good, just as we suspected. That one shall soon perish! Now, to further thy acceptance in our order, go see Elistaria on the northeastern most isle of Britannia. Say to her the password, 'Impera'."
Name: Greymarch
You see: A sorely beaten fighter.
Froed: "My son! Hast thou seen him?"
Any: "Then why taunt me?"
Yes: "And, he is well?"
Any: "No, no it can't be!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "Where didst thou see him?"
Any: "Hmmm..."
Skara Brae: "Aha, he must have hidden in the woods! Surely, thou wilt let me repay you in some way?"
Any: "Hmmm...."
Yes: "I have nothing material, but I shall tell ye what I know! When Lord British left for the Underworld he left behind his Sceptre. I was told that the Sceptre had great powers against the forces of evil! Seek out Sir Simon in a keep, perched on the high mountains of an isle west of Spiritwood."
Bye: "Good luck!"

Bye: "Nice talking shoppe."

Know that ye may only pass if on a sacred quest!
Enter the Shrine of the Codex!
The Codex of Ultimate Wisdom lies before thee ...
The Book is open to the page thou dost seek !
Upon the hallowed page thou dost read:
"It is the guilt, not the guillotine, that constitutes the shame."
A STRANGE WIND CAUSES THE PAGE TO TURN !
Thou dost read:
Beyond shames egress in the centre of the underworld there is a place of darkness!
Beyond this darkness lies the gate to the core of the world!
When thou art ready thou must call forth VERAMOCOR to unlock the gate and venture past ethereal wards and stealers of souls!
That which the world hath lost awaits thy coming!

You see: A wisened adventurer!
Job: "I've come to Paws to visit the guild."
Guild: "I hear they have some of the best gems made."
Gems: "I am searching for the mystic Shrine of Spirituality, and feel they would be of good use!"
Spirituality oder Shrine: "I fear it was destroyed!"
Destroyed: "Dost thou know where to find it?"
Any: "Too bad."
Yes: "Where?"
Any: "I don't think so."
Moongate oder Midnight oder Gate: "Art thou saying that I must enter a Moongate to reach the Shrine of Spirituality?"
Any: "Oh."
Yes: "At midnight?"
Any: "Oh."
Yes: "Oh, no wonder I never found it! Well, that one is likely safe then... But, should thou see one destroyed... Remember they can be restored with the Words of Power!"
Word oder Power: "Whilst at the destroyed shrine, yell the word of power. Then meditate will the Shrine's virtue with the proper mantra for three cycles."
Bye: "Until we next meet."
Name: Bandaii
You see: A mysterious mage.
Job: "I seek a magical beast."
Magical oder Beast: "Since the last age, rumours abound of a legendary horse!"
Rumours oder Legendary oder Horse: "I search for Smith, the notorious talking horse!"
Fly oder Carpet: "Yes, I once had a magic flying carpet. I wilt tell you where it was, if thou wilt help me find the talking horse!"
Smith oder Talking: "I do not doubt the rumours, but this I must see for myself! Dost thou believe in talking horses?"
Any: "Too bad."
Yes: "Hast thou seen one?"
Any: "Too bad."
Yes: "Was it Smith?"
Any: "Think of that, another!"
Yes: "Where didst thou see him?"
Any: "Unlikely."
Iolo oder Hut: "At last! For thy efforts I shall tell you that I gave a magical carpet to Lord British himself! He kept it in his private chamber atop his castle! If thou can get it, I'm sure thou can use it." (Ende des Gesprächs)
Bye: "Farewell friend."

Name: Elistaria
You see: A tall, dark lady
Job: "I dabble in the dark arts."
Dabble oder Arts oder Dark: "I play with forces beyond the comprehension of most mortals."
Forces oder Comprehension oder Mortals: "I conjure daemons and such."
Daemons oder Demons: "Yes! My favorite creatures! Thou hast seen my two best summonings guarding this keep."
Oppression: "What is the password?"
Any: (Call Guards) "Daemons! Kill this wretch!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Impera: "Ah yes, now I remember. Thou art the one infiltrating the Resistance. Here, wear this badge when thou doth wish to show thou art with him and the Oppression! It may be that Thrud has some items that may be useful in your mission."
Mission oder Item: "The Jeweled Weapons of course! Ask Thrud for them!"
Bye: "Begone, wretch!"
Name: Thrud
You see: A dark, heavyset man.
Job: "An infamous mercenary!"
Infamous oder Mercenary: "I enjoy killing immensely!"
Killing oder Immensely: "Surely thou hast heard of the time when I butchered an entire village?"
Any: "I had just returned from a war across the sea, when on my way home, I stopped at an inn. The meal I ate there gave me indigestion for two days! Upon recovery, I killed the innkeeper and his entire staff. The ensuing outcry forced me to dispense with the rest of the village!"
Item oder Jewel oder Weapons: "The Jeweled Sword and Shield are good weapons indeed! Wouldst thou like them?"
Any: "Thy loss!"
Yes: "I shall let you have those great weapons for the Resistance's password, that thou hast so cleverly discovered. Tell me, what is it?"
Any: (Call Guards) "Liar! Guards!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Dawn: "May they serve you well!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Bye: "Uhmph!"
Name: Saduj
You see: A shifty-eyed man.
Job: "I'm the gardener."
Gardener: "Really! Just inspecting the plants."
Plants oder Inspecting: "Thou knowest, watering and the like!"
Watering oder Like: "What is the matter...Dost thou not believe me?"
Any: "I see." "For that matter, what art thou doing here?"
Any: "Likely story!" "Art thou with the Oppression?"
Any: "Neither am I."
Yes: "Prove it! What's the password?"
Any: "Impostor!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Impera: "Greetings friend! Knowest thou of my mission?"
Any: "Oh."
No: "Blackthorn himself sent me here to find an object hidden in Lord British's chambers. Might I join thee that we might work together?"
Any: "Later perhaps."
Yes: "Good!" (Join Party)
Blackthorn oder Object oder Hidden oder British oder Chamber: "I know not what it is, but it rests in a sandalwood box."
Sandalwood oder Box: "If destroyed, there shall be no chance for that scourge British to return!"
Bye: "Be off!"
9.02.08) Die ersten Artefakte von Lord British (The Sandalwood Box - The Sceptre - The Crown):

Name: Grendel
You see: A giant rat! "Squeek... What is thy name?" ... "A pleasure. Squeek... What dost thou want?"
Job: "I once was a great alchemist!"
Alchemist: "Squeek... That was before my accident!"
Accident: "Squeek... I was working on a spell called: VAS REL XEN BET It got a little out of hand."
Spell oder Hand oder Vas Rel Xen Bet: "It was to be an enchantment to turn foes into rats."
Rat: "Squeek... During an early experiment I was transformed into a rat! I have since perfected a lesser version."
Lesser oder Version oder Perfected: "I call it REL XEN BET . It is of the Sixth Circle, and shall turn one being into a rat for fair time! Wouldst thou like the formula?"
Any: "O.K."
Yes: "It requires that one part spider silk be mixed with a pinch of sulfurous ash... ...with a crushed root of mandrake and spores scraped from a nightshade cap."
Bye: "Squeek!"

An air of cowardice doth surround thee.
An air of hatred doth surround thee.
An air of falsehood doth surround thee.
Name: Balinor
You see: A leather-winged abomination "Foul mortal, thou hast disturbed my peaceful rest! My bound duty is to prevent intruders from passing! And so I shall! But first, thou dost seem an educated person and so I offer you an educated solution to the problem at hand... I suggest a battle of wits for thy passage. If I win, I shall slay thee if thou dost win, I shall let you pass to face the perils within! Dost thou accept?"
Any: (Call Guards) "So be it!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "Ah good, I've not tested my wit for some time! What is as tall as a house, round as a cup, and all the king's horses can't draw it up?"
Any: (Call Guards) "Hah! Thou hast failed! Now to keep my part of the bargain!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Well: (Call Guards) "Thou hast guessed well, foolish one, but thou hast committed a fatal blunder! Never trust a Daemon's word! Hah, hah, hah!

(Keller) (Erdgeschoss)

(Erste Etage) (Zweite Etage)

(Dritte Etage)
Guard: "Give now the password, bewarer of the Badge."
Impera
"Pass, friend!"
Name: Weblock
You see: A mysterious old mage with a twisted, bony face. "Please sign in. What is thy name?" ... "A pleasure. Where or whom dost thou seek?"
Job: "I am here to aid thee."
Aid: "Where or whom dost thou seek?"
Blackthorn: "Try up the northern stairs to the throne room, but he usually does not see visitors!"
Gorn: "hass or He is a prisoner in the dungeon!"
Kraw: "He is likely in the stables."
Weblock: "'Tis I."
Gallrot: "The chef is probably in the kitchen."
Foulwell: "The jester is often hard to locate!"
Throne: "Try up the northern stairs."
Kitchen: "Go up the ladder in the main foyer."
Foyer: "Back down the stairs."
Dungeon: "Take the stairs behind the guardposts, near the front gates."
Roof: "Climb up a corner tower from the dungeon level."
Stables: "Take the ladder down."
Bye: "Watch thy step."
Name: Blackthorn
You see: The Dark Lord himself!
"Greetings, ..., what an unexpected pleasure! Wilt thou be staying with us long?"
Any: (Call Guards) "I beg to differ! So very kind of you to deliver thyself to me! Prepare now to meet thy fate!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "Hast thou joined us in the Oppression?"
Any: (Call Guards) "Then how considerate of you to turn thyself in... Guards! Seize this infidel!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "Then, surely, thou dost know our password.... What is it?"
Any: (Call Guards) "No, I'm afraid that is not it... Guards! Seize this infidel!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Impera: "Fine! With you on our side, we shall be invincible! Please, feel free to roam my castle and grounds!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Name: Foulwell
You see: A pompous, silly man.
Job: "I entertain with tales of the inquisition."
Tales oder Inquisition: "Why, just the other day, we had a marvelous time, watching a young lady being drawn and quartered!"
Lady oder Drawn oder Quartered: "She refused to humble herself to a guard's advances! Isn't that a riot?"
Any: "Perhaps then, thou wouldst find more humorous the one about the visitor who failed to laugh at the Royal Jester's stories. The cook's young nephew was a little brat. He didn't laugh at my jokes, so we threw 'im in the vat! Ho, ho, ha, ha, he, he... How 'bout that one, like it?"
Any: (Call Guards) "GUARDS!"
Yes: "I thank thee."
Yes: "Wouldst thou like to join us next time?"
Any: "Just watch thyself, friend!"
Yes: "I'll be sure to look ye up."
Bye: "Jingle, jingle!"
Name: .... "Thou art in grave danger!"
You see: A scraggly, tortured soul in tattered garb.
Job: "I've been here oh so some months, and all for the breaking of a Law of Virtue!"
Grave oder Danger: "Guards, daemons and Shadowlords abound! Thou must leave before it's too late!"
Guards oder Daemons oder Shadowlords: "Yes, they come here often to beat and taunt me!"
Breaking oder Law oder Virtue: "It matters not, they are all a travesty!"
Travesty: "They defile the foundations of Virtue!"
Bye: "Don't leave me here! Please unlock my chains!"
Name: Kraw
You see: A simple man with a crooked back.
Job: "I tend the horses."
Horses oder Tend: "Yes, we have a good stable of thoroughbreds."
Stable oder Thoroughbreds: "Indeed, the finest. Why, we have not only the plough and mountain breeds, but even the purest breed of the High Steppes. We lack only the Valorian warhorse, that we still seek!"
Valorian: "That breed we still lack."
Steppes oder Plough oder Mountain: "That breed we have."
Bye: "Farewell."
Name: Gallrot
You see: Fat and greasy man.
Job: "I make the slop that feeds this lot of mangy dogs."
Food oder Slop: "A little ol' horse meat, a few young children, that sort of thing. Care to try some?"
Any: "Don't touch the stuff meself."
Yes: Gulp... Choke... Gag... Spit... "Aye, goes down a bit rough."
Meat oder Horse: "It's cheap an' plentiful!"
Young oder Children: "When we can get 'em!"
Cook oder Chef: "I make the food here."
Mangy oder Dogs: "Well, they may not really be dogs, but they sure is mangy!"
Bye: "Oh, bugger off then."
Name: Gorn
You see: A mighty-thewed barbarian. "Ah, Brohm be praised! A soul to share my cell! With me for an escape?"
Any: "Fool!" (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "If I helps thee wilt thou take me with thee?"
Any: "Hmmm. (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "I've escaped some times, and been caught as many. I knows this castle likes the backs of me hands! In the dead of night we must go out through a secret door that's here behinds me. Climbs up onto the roof and sneaks down the northern ladder. In Blackthorn's bedroom, go through a secret door, down the ladder on t'other side. Through the secret door to the north, down another ladder and out the back gates! Wait there'til morning when the drawbridge is lowered and flee for our lives! Get all that down?"
Yes: "Get the keys I hid in the brazier and let's be off!" (Join Party)
Bye: "Take care."
Name: Hassad
You see: An old and blind wizard. "Who is there? What is thy name?" ... "A pleasure. What dost thou want?"
Job: "I am a prisoner, just as thou art now."
Prisoner: "I was taken from my home in New Magincia."
Magincia: "Therein I led a peaceful life."
Life oder Peaceful: "Until the Shadowlords found me."
Found oder Shadowlords: "I have knowledge him seeks."
Knowledge oder Blackthorn oder Seeks: "That is for me to know."
Power oder Word oder Council: "I know of the Great Council, but what maketh you ask me?"
Any: "I know nothing about it!"
Kaiko oder Dawn: "She is a good woman. If she has told you of me, she must have great faith in thee. I presume thou dost seek the Word of Power for the dungeon Hythloth. Are we where I may speak freely?"
Any: "Then I shall wait."
Yes: "The Word thou seeketh is IGNAVUS !"
Bye: "Farewell."

Hereupon began the Quest of his Majesty Lord British to explore and chart the new Underworld at 11/27/137

9.03.02) Mystic Weapon & Mystic Armor - Der Shard of Cowardice (Dungeon Hythloth):

(Erste Ebene) (Zweite Ebene)
Name: Johne, Captain Johne
You see: An unkempt mage in tattered robes. "At long last, another living soul!"
Job: "I fear the Shadowlords!"
Fear oder Shadowlords: "Years ago, my ship was swallowed by a massive whirlpool. The remains of my ship washed up on this isle with myself and three others. When I recovered, I explored my surroundings, and found a great gem broken into three shards. The Shards, full of evil, drove me to kill my three companions, and from their blood sprang the three Shadowlords. Taking the Shards deep into this underworld, they entrapped Lord British, and hold him in their power. They spare me only to taunt me with such news until my dying day. Wilt thou save Britannia?"
Any: "Pity." (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "Might I join thee?"
Any: "Pity." (Ende des Gesprächs)
Yes: "Let me avenge my wrongdoing." (Join Party)
Bye: "Beware!"

9.03.04) Der Shard of Hatred (Dungeon Wrong & Dungeon Covetous):

9.03.05) Der Shard of Falsehood (Dungeon Deceit):

Yell: Faulinei
A shadowlord appears
Use: Gem Shard
Thou dost hold above thee the evil Shard of Falsehood ...
... and cast it into the Flame of Truth!

The doom of the Shadowlord Faulinei is wrought!
Yell: Astaroth
A shadowlord appears
Use: Gem Shard
Thou dost hold above thee the evil Shard of Hatred ...
... and cast it into the Flame of Love!

The doom of the Shadowlord Astaroth is wrought!

Mandur is absorbed!
Katrina is absorbed!
Shamino is absorbed!
Iolo is absorbed!
Mariah is absorbed!
Jaana is absorbed!
Lord British says:
"Well met, Mandur!"
"Didst thou bring my box?"
You reply: Yes
Lord British carefully opens the box ...
He says:
"An artifact of astral power fell to this earth long ago from beyond the skies ..."
"From the world that thee and I both call home did it come."
"Often did I return to the old world with its magic, and now will it free us from this prison!"
"Older even than Mondain's evil are the forces which bind us here ..."
"But older still is the power of the Orb of the Moons!"
"FOLLOW!" cries Lord British, as he extracts a small, red sphere from the wooden box. He then casts it to the floor. "Our worlds await!"

The Homecoming |
Time and weather have taken their toll on the wooded path between your house and the circle of stones. For a long time you stand within the circle in the misty woods, dazed and lost, overcome by the disorienting journey between worlds. But these woods are too familiar to dead you for estroy. Turning away from the morning sun, a short walk brings you to the doorstep of your own long-deserted house.

Much time has passed since the night you left, but your front door is unlocked and opens at a touch, as if to greet you home. Entering, you lay to rest the arms that served you in your quest. Gone are the dark feelings that this day might be your last, gone are the pains of losses and the joys of victories in your Quest to save a kingdom.
Gone also are your TV set, stereo, and living-room furniture; a reminder that Evil dwells still within your own world and that your Quest of the Avatar is not yet at an end.

That might you lie safe and warm in your own bed, but the comfort of your home offers you no peace. The insistent question in your mind will not be laid to rest.
What of Britannia's fate? How fares Lord British? It the tyrant Blackthorn unseated at last, or does innocent blood still spill for the cause of his reign? Perhaps the worst fear of all ist that you will never know the answers you seek, as those answers are nowhere to be found in this world. Finally sleep comes and you embrace it willngly, as though solace might be found in dreams.
|
The Dream |
You stand in the shadow in a vast, stark chamber sparsely lit by smoking torches. Manacles and instruments of torture abound. With a sudden chill, you recognize the throne room of Blackthorn's palace! His daemon guards are not in attendance, but the massive wooden door swings gently on one brass hinge as if some montrous creatures had been in a great hurry to leave.
Blackthorn bears little resemblance to the proud ruler who once held you at his mercy. Now, the black robed King slumps heavily in his ironwood throne. Before him stands Lord British, whose armour of tattered leather and tarwished steel is oddly complemented by a serpentine amulet, a golden sceptre, and a regally bejewelled crown.

Blackthorn looks upon Lord British without hatred, without even surprise, but with a passive calmness, as would a prisoner awaiting the sentence of hanging.
"Thy deeds were black, yet thy punishment is not mine to give." Lord British speaks gently to the remnant of a man who was once King. "The evil of thy reign did not begin within thy heart, though there it must be ended. I have no wish to see thee die for having been ensnared by dark powers that took thy will from thee."
"Instead, I offer thee a choice. Thou canst return to Castle Britannia with me, and accept the trial and verdict of the Great Council. Or ..."
Lord British holds aloft the Orb of the Moons. He does not appear to focus his will upon it as he did in the dungeon, but instead he closes his eyes and tosses the Orb carelessly into the air. The red gate springs up where it lands, just to the right of Blackthorn's throne.
"... thou canst enter this Gate, and live thy life in exile in a place that weither I nor thee hath ever seen."

Blackthorn rises slowly, tiredly, and stands to face Lord British. He lifts his head as if to speak, but pauses instead, holding the True King's gaze with an unreadable expression. Finally he turns away and gathers the folds of his cloak around him. Without so much as a last glance over the shoulder, Blackthorn steps through the gate and is gone.
